In Yong’an, there is a young entrepreneur who returned from overseas to join the bamboo industry. With the boldness and determination characteristic of her generation, she has broken through traditional bottlenecks and brought new vitality to the green economy. Today’s Young Entrepreneur Spotlight introduces Yu Yan, Executive Vice President of the Sanming Young Entrepreneurs Association and President of Fujian Heqichang Bamboo Industry Co., Ltd., and her journey of innovation in the bamboo sector.

When the reporter visited Heqichang Bamboo Industry, Yu Yan was meeting with senior executives to discuss the company’s long-term strategic roadmap—analyzing trends in the bamboo sector and exploring the company’s strategic positioning for the next three to five years in areas such as eco-friendly bamboo composite materials, home décor panels, and bamboo biomass utilization.

Yu Yan’s family has deep roots in the bamboo industry. In the early 1990s, her father, Yu Xianlu, began studying technological breakthroughs in bamboo materials. In 2010, Yu Yan returned to China after studying abroad, giving up promising opportunities overseas to join the company her father founded. Upon entry, she immediately refreshed the company’s strategic direction, proposing a development philosophy of “pursuing efficiency through innovation, through high-end positioning, and through scale.” She established a foundation of “rooted in China, aiming for the world,” guiding Heqichang to step beyond Fujian’s bamboo forests and into broader markets.

“First, it was out of family affection. I saw how hard my father worked and how persistent he was. Second, it was my attachment to my hometown. I hoped to bring back what I had learned and seen abroad and contribute in my own small way.”

Under Yu Yan’s leadership, the company invested heavily in R&D and secured more than a dozen patents. Projects such as all-bamboo container flooring and low-carbon bamboo modular housing structures filled provincial market gaps. She expanded the product lines from engineering boards to outdoor decking, home panels, and even bamboo crafts. Global giants—including the Maersk Group—became long-term partners. With a global perspective shaped by the container flooring business, Heqichang has firmly established itself on the international stage.

“Our company invested tremendous effort and financial resources. More importantly, we repeatedly brought experts and translated our technical findings into English, presenting them to our overseas clients—again and again—until we finally earned their recognition.”

As the company grew, Yu Yan actively fulfilled her social responsibilities. More than RMB 4 million in donations and support funds have been contributed, leaving a trail of warmth along Heqichang’s public-welfare journey. She has received multiple honors, including Outstanding Innovation Project by Returned Overseas Scholars, Fujian Youth Entrepreneurship Award, and the Fujian May Fourth Medal. She also participates in formulating both national and international standards for the bamboo industry, becoming a true “standard setter.”

Today, Heqichang is recognized as a National Key Leading Enterprise in Forestry Industry. Upholding the philosophy of “Harmony Leads to Prosperity”, Yu Yan continues to re-examine bamboo craftsmanship and explore new pathways for green development.
